In addition, it is clear that the publication rate is not evenly spread over time but shows a speed-up in recent times, perhaps not exponential but certainly very close. We find a similar heterogenous variety of topics in the splendid six-volume series edited by Michele Emmer, Mathematics and Culture. It should be understood that all of the above can be studied not only from a western perspective but also from non-western ones, as plenty of studies in ethnomathematics have shown. There are books and papers that deal with: Rather striking is the fact that the heterogeneity of this sample is quite high. The study of the combination of mathematics and the arts is not a novel one, witness the simple fact that an elementary search on Google Scholar, using the keywords ‘mathematics’ and ‘art’, produced more than three million hits.
